Carrie Brogden
Partner

Carrie Brogden was born in Virginia and was riding ponies before she could walk. Her mother brought her first pony, Lassie, home in the back of a station wagon while six months pregnant. Carrie grew up with two veterinarians and lots of thoroughbreds on her parent’s farm, Pair O Docs, where they stood the classy old stallion, Clem. Carrie showed ponies extensively throughout her youth; her favorite thing to do every weekend until she was sixteen.

Carrie attended James Madison University in Virginia, graduating with a degree in Psychology and a minor in Biology, heading towards a career in genetics. She lived outside of Washington DC and ran her family's chain of upscale animal giftware stores until they were sold in 2000. The thoroughbred bug bit her again as her mother started back with a broodmare band shuttling back and forth from Va to Ky. Carrie’s background in show hunters gave her a big leg up in developing an eye for a horse and the particular movement that most athletes possess.

She moved to Kentucky in 2001 where her mother, husband and she started a farm named after her great grandfather who was dean of the University of Mass, Dean Machmer. To this day, there is a building on the Amherst campus named in his honor, Machmer Hall, which became the name of Carrie’s family's farm. With their own mares, year-round client mares and partnership mares, they currently have about 180 head of horses on the farm. Machmer Hall also preps approximately 60 yearlings a year for the sales.

In just eight short years, their graduates include: Premium Tap G1 Black Seventeen G1 Meadow Breeze G1 Accredit G2 ,etc. Carrie and her Australian born husband, Craig, live on the farm along with their three great kids, Reece, Isabelle and Layne, 4 dogs and one cat. Carrie loves the thoroughbred industry and enjoys every moment spent with the horses, especially watching a winning graduate cross the finish line first. She looks forward to a great future with Select Sales.

Tom Ryan
Partner

Tom was born in 1976 on the family farm in Wexford, Ireland. He received his early education galloping racehorses and showing yearlings for some of Ireland's more colorful characters.

After completing the Irish National Stud course in 1996, Tom decided to make Australia his home. As stallion manager of Widden Stud and a farm manager for the Independent Stallion Station, Tom was provided the opportunity to travel to Japan for a breeding season at Shadai Stallion Station where he gained valuable experience and made numerous contacts.

In 1999 Tom made his first trip to Kentucky where he worked for Ashford Stud. After working for Coolmore Ireland and Coolmore Australia and having thumb surgery as a result of a run in with Woodman, ‘Tom Thumb' embarked on a career in Bloodstock. Tom took advantage of working with Dr Demi O'Byrne before taking a position in 2002 with Pete Bradley at his Lexington based agency. In 2007 Tom decided to go on his own in Bloodstock with Cherokee Equine International and then in 2009 he created Select Sales with the Brogdens.
